About

Phil Thomson has a bow with many strings. In his professional life he has journeyed through a variety of roles - journalist, copy editor, graphic designer, lyricist, senior lecturer to name but a few. Ultimately, what connects all his talents together is his heuristic love of ideas and notions, and his passion for communicating them. Phil enjoys challenging his viewers and listeners to think again, to stretch their mind, to actively seek a different point of view.

Phil studied art & design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and later gained an MA in Communication Strategies from the University of Wolverhampton. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Being enormously skilled in a number of disciplines is in part the reason that Phil likes to explore the notion of identity - what defines us, or indeed, what sets us apart. This is particularly evident in his touring photography exhibition Mono 68: series – one city, one month, one camera.  These stunning compositions offer a rare glimpse of an old and new Dundee, telling a story of a city and a people in search of their identity.

“I have long been aware that my passion for communication - to understand how it takes place in and through us all - has had to be given vent in a number of ways over the years. It frustrates and fascinates me at the same time and is probably best summed up in one of my favourite concepts by Browning, loosely paraphrased as 'we sleep to wake, we fall to rise, we are baffled to fight better’. I go through life permanently baffled yet, hopefully, creatively indignant enough to keep on asking the questions.”

Lyricist

Phil has spent many years collaborating with a variety of musicians creating wonderful works in a host of different genres.

His latest release with Irma Dee 'Love is Breaking' is a spectacular celebration of what Christmas is really about, yet the spirit of the song remains relevant throughout the year.

Poet

Phil’s poems are hugely evocative, and exquisitely crafted.

The imagery is intimate, and yet the poetry has a restless quality: curious detail is playfully turned on its head until we find that we ourselves are the ones doing the searching.  There is no better evidence for this than his latest book 'Still, but still moving', realeased by Andrew Sparke Publications. Not content with that he is currently developing a range of poetry films.

Writer

Phil has numerous academic publications to his credit, notable among which as contributing author to 'The Design Student's Handbook', published by Pearson/Routledge. His debut novel Momentary lapses in concentration  - already an eBook with Gold Word Publishing - is now also available in print through Andrew Sparke Publications.
